As an early baby boomer, I am honored to be part of the feminist revolution, challenging the old rules and roles of who women were allowed to be.
We fought to open up opportunities from sports and education, to the arts, finance, health, religion, the trades, politics, marriage, divorce, sexuality, leadership … and power.
What we could not foresee were the decades down the line where new conflicting rules and expectations for women solidified on top of those ancient patriarchal ones we carried in our bones.
You’re not alone if you’re struggling to live up to both the old rules—be pleasing, selfless, nurturing and beautiful—and the new ones—be ambitious, independent, strong, and productive.
The women’s movement of the 1970s was all about creating choices. But younger generations inherited a new invisible script instead.
Since I lived through the early days when those new choices were won, I don’t have that same inherited script playing in my head.
What I do have is a map of how you can write The Whole Woman Code of your own, to live from the wholeness of your being.
With tenderness and sometimes tears, you can turn and face the parts of yourself you were taught to fear or fight against. Power is not your enemy. That was the distortion. In truth, it’s your Life Force.
